Short description: 
Helena Barbas was born in Lisbon (1951). She got her “Habilitation” («Agregação») in Comparative Literature/Literature and Cyberarts (2008). Completed a MA in Comparative Literary Studies (1990) and a PhD in Portuguese Studies/Comparative Literature (1998): «Mary Magdalene – Images and Shadows», at the F.C.S.H., New University of Lisbon (U.N.L.). Attended some seminars at the Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence – coordinated by Professor Luís Moniz Pereira – at the F.C.T. /U.N.L. Caparica (2003).  Professor Lecturer at the F.C.S.H. since 1987 she taught Literary Theory and Comparative Literature – History of Aesthetical Ideas, Literature and the Arts. Since 2006 she is teaching Literature and New Media, Literature and Ciberarts, Analysis and Production of e-leaning Materials.

Research areas: 
Helena's present research interests are man-machine interaction; virtual characters, avatars and their characterization; resource to AI decision models and agent behaviour for the making of digital characters and narratives. She worked in the InStory Project, developing mobile digital interactive narratives, and studying the consequences of recent IT practices for Narratology /Literary theory. Presently she is preparing a project on «serious games» - PlatoMundi.
She has collaborated with several newspapers, magazines and with national TV cultural programs. She is literary reviewer for the national weekly broadsheet «Expresso».
